Rural Sound Narratives (Field Recordings From Portugal, 2009) features recordings I made throughout central Portugal between July and September of 2009. It’s a work of pure phonography (using a Zoom H4 digital recorder), revealing sonically some aspects of this region's natural and human life.

Here is depicted the abundant sonorous dynamics of a flock of sheep while they grazed.

Place: Caldas de S. Pablo, Oliveira of the Hospital, Coimbra, Portugal

In Portugal, as in other European countries, water wheels were once used by farmers to transport water to the fields. Nowadays, with most of the agricultural lands abandoned, they are only tourist attractions.

This is a small interview done with an elderly couple in the village of Pena (Gois) about the difficult times of Portuguese dictatorship.

This recording depicts the task of catching beans, a practice very common in the Portuguese Center Region.

The house has to be washed with a pressure system before being painted.

This recording was made in the middle of a flock of sheep during the daily miking. We can hear the sound of the animals and the electrical system used to extract milk.

The sound of another water wheel, smaller than the water wheel portrayed in Track 2.

This is a brief recording of a man responsible for watching over the rivers, his life and other events.

This recording was made by a small dam in the Alva river. The dams of the river lead the water to fields of local farms.

This is the hard daily life of a shepherd and his daily routine, which begins at 5 a.m.
